چکیده

Automated planning technologies show great promise of reducing operations costs by automating the spacecraft mission planning process. However, one of the bottlenecks is acquiring spacecraft operations knowledge from operations personnel and expressing it in a plan model. One of the primary design goals of the ASPEN planning language is to eliminate the knowledge acquisition bottleneck by making it easy for operations personnel to build plan models themselves. The ASPEN language is designed to be used by domain experts that have no knowledge of automated planning technology. Spacecraft operations knowledge can be expressed in ways that are natural to operations personnel. The language is intended to be intuitive and require almost no knowledge of how the planning algorithm works. ASPEN itself provides hooks for interfacing with existing planning support tools, and has a mixed-initiative planning mode and GUI that allow operations personnel to easily edit automatically generated plans if desired. A non-AI expert with an operations background was able to construct ASPEN models that are scheduled for use on two missions, EO-1 and UFO-1.

ASPEN – Automated Planning and Scheduling for Space Mission Operations

This paper describes the ASPEN system for automation of planning and scheduling for space mission operations. ASPEN contains a number of innovations including: an expressive but easy to use modeling language, multiple search (inference) engines, iterative repair suited for mixed-initiative human in loop operations, real-time replanning and response (in the CASPER system), and plan optimization....

Leveraging Multiple Artificial Intelligence Techniques to Improve the Responsiveness in Operations Planning: ASPEN for Orbital Express

ISSN 0738-4602 n The challenging timeline for DARPA’s Orbital Express mission demanded a flexible, responsive, and (above all) safe approach to mission planning. Mission planning for space is challenging because of the mixture of goals and constraints. Every space mission tries to squeeze all of the capacity possible out of the spacecraft. For Orbital Express, this means performing as many expe...

Iterative Repair Planning for Spacecraft Operations Using the Aspen System

This paper describes the Automated Scheduling and Planning Environment (ASPEN). ASPEN encodes complex spacecraft knowledge of operability constraints, flight rules, spacecraft hardware, science experiments and operations procedures to allow for automated generation of low level spacecraft sequences. Using a technique called iterative repair, ASPEN classifies constraint violations (i.e., conflic...

Flight Software Issues in Onboard Automated Planning: Lessons Learned on EO-1

Planning and scheduling systems for spacecraft operations have traditionally been an important step in the ground operations of mission planners. In the Autonomous Sciencecraft Experiment (ASE), this step is moved onboard the Earth Observing-1 spacecraft. The ASE features several advanced technologies: onboard image processing, a robust execution engine, and onboard planning and scheduling. Thi...

ASPEN: A Framework for Automated Planning and Scheduling of Spacecraft Control and Operations

A number of successful applications of automated planning and scheduling applications to spacecraft operations have recently been reported in the literature. However, these applications have been one-of-a-kind applications that required a substantial amount of development effort. In this paper, we describe ASPEN (Automated Planning/Scheduling Environment), a modular, reconfigurable application ...
